Your website was recommended by Andrew Davison in response to my message to the Northumbria-L rootsweb list. The family that I am interested in, is detailed below, and differs a little from the family that you show on your website. I am particularly interested in Rowell Temperley and Jane Temperley as children of Edward Temperley and Jane Robson (m 1809 at Newcastle upon Tyne). I have linked Jane Temperley to this family based on the following census record:
1881 Apr 4: ENG NBL Cramlington: census: TREWICK, Robert, h, w, 67, m, carrier, b NBL Hartburn RICHARDSON, Robert, son-i-l, m, 42, m, grocer, b IRE RICHARDSON, Dorothy, d, m, 34, f, b NBL Cramlington RICHARDSON, Jane, gdau, u, 1, f, b NBL Cramlington RICHARDSON, Henry, gson, u, 2mths, m, b NBL Cramlington TREWICK, Robert, gson, u, 17, m, assistant carrier, b NBL Cramlington BAULKS, Jane Elizabeth, niece, u, 13, f, nurse (dom), b NBL Cramlington (neighbours to the MASON-ROUSE household and not far from the ALEXANDER household) [RG9 Piece 5094 Folio 64 Page 6 CP Cramlington RD Tynemouth SD Blyth ED 14 Schedule 24] [8780] [NB07/067]. (I have found this family on the 1871, 1861 and 1851 censuses too). Jane Elizabeth BAULKS was a great niece of Jane Temperley who was the late wife of Robert Trewick, the head of the household. This Jane Temperley was bapt 19 Apr 1818 at Whalton (according to the IGI). I have established that this Jane Elizabeth BAULKS was daughter of Thomas Ellison BAULKS stoker & engine driver (ca 1840-ca 1879) & Maria TEMPERLEY (b ca Feb 1844) who was daughter of Robert Robson TEMPERLEY agricultural labourer (b 1810 died before 1851 census) & Catherine MINTO (b ca 1816), son of Edward TEMPERLEY m 1809 Jane ROBSON. Rowell Temperley's baptism (2 Oct 1816) seems to be too close to the baptism of Henry Temperley (5 May 1816), but I did see on your website a reference to an illegitimate child of Edward Temperley. Was Rowell that illegitimate child? In any case, I would be grateful if you could assist in any way, especially by putting me in touch with descendants of this particular branch of the Temperley family. I came across your home page. It is a nice site. I noticed that you have some DEPLEDGE info on your page. I happen to be working on this line, from the other end. I am almost at the point where our lines may merge. I've been working on a friend's ancestors, and DEPLEDGE is one of his line. I have his ancestors back to Jonathan DEPLEDGE b. 1805, Cheshire who m. Rhoda JACKSON, b. 1803, Cheshire. If you do see a connection, would you please write? The people I've been working with were and are in Fall River, MA. And entire lage family moved from Cheshire to Fall River starting with the 1850's. It took me a while to realize that all of the names I had seen (especially in the cemetery) are all one large family. Thanks so much. Betty G. Middleboro, MA TOMIAMI(at)aol.com

I have been researching the Timperley family for Violet Christine Cameron (nee Timperley), daughter of Frank Hodgson Timperley. She is my first cousin once removed (thank heavens for Family Tree Maker). Frank’s wife, Violet Goldelse Herger, was the sister of my grandmother Hilda Herger. I found your web site most interesting and it answered some questions such as why Frank was raised by his uncle. Christine speaks highly of the Berridge family and especially Rev Jesse Berridge. I am not sure if you are still actively researching the family, but would be happy to share information with you. Sincerely, Scott Bentham, Winnipeg, Canada bentham(at)escape.ca

This booklet also contains information on the families who have occupied the site. The Group has also carried out excavations in the area around Altrincham which may also be of interest to visitors to your site. Regards, Bryan Burton bryan.burtonbj(at)ntlworld.com

Here are a couple of comments on the Hunstanworth Branch of the Temperleys
X4.2.1.1.2.6 Robson Temperley m Elizabeth Buckham, not Buckhorn as on the site. They married about 1854 and farmed an 82 acre farm in Satley, Co. Durham. They had ten children, not eight as on the web site, over a period of twenty-five years. My references are the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census returns of Satley, Lanchester Reg. Dist.
His aunt was X4.2.1.1.4 Hannah Temperley m Thomas Murray as per the web site. They had a daughter Elizabeth Murray who married John Telfer. The Telfers' second daughter was Hannah Telfer born Kirkwhelpington Northumberland - some distance away. She married George Buckham who was the first cousin-once- removed of Elizabeth Buckham X4.2.1.1.2.6m. Sources Hunstanworth parish register and birth and marriage certificates.
So second cousins once removed married second cousins once removed with the husbands the grandsons and the wives the great-granddaughters. Not an uncommon occurrence I would imagine but noteworthy. George Buckham and Hannah Telfer were my great-grandparents. Regards, Frank Lake flake(at)suscom.net

We are researching my wife's family with Depledge on the male side and Schofield on the female side. My wife was born & bred in Manchester, and married Walter Griffiths in 1970. We moved to Lymington in 1971 and have taken up Family History just after my mother-in-law died in November 2003. We have made good progress back to 1837. To put you in the Depledge picture, working backwards from my wife Doreen's side:

    Harold  b. 1909 m. 1941 Doreen Schofield: d 1964
    Henry Grayson b. 1877 m. 1901 Agnes McCall: d 1941
    Thomas b abt 1837 m. 1865 Mary Ann Dormer: d 1878
    Thomas b abt 1810 m. Hannah ELLIS ( from Sheffield )

I was using the mlfhs.org website today, and was directed to your website. I immediately recognised our Thomas ( 1810 ) since we know he was living in Fernilee, Derbyshire in 1841 age 40 with his wife Hannah and sons Samuel ( 5 ) and Thomas ( 4 ). Next door was Richard Depledge ( 54 ) with his wife Fanny and son James ( 24 ). Thomas Snr and Richard were born in Stockport. Thomas Jnr was born in Fernilee. So we can put a family name to Hannah and go back another Depledge generation to Matthew who married Sarah Timperley.

Thank you for making your extensive knowledge available to us. Do you know where Matthew came from? Our main sources of information are the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, various Register Offices ( for certificates ) and 1881 & 1901 censuses. We hope our enquiry will not be a nuisance to you but show our appreciation for your 'published' research.

G'day, I have recently come across your website on the Timperly family tree and noticed that you have some information missing on the fourth of Jesse Berridges' sons. As you correctly note one son died during the first world war, he was Jesse Dell Berridge -Lieutenant Royal Engineers, killed on 24 May 1918. Further details can be found in the Commonwealth War Graves commission web site. Jesse Dell - known as 'Dell' within the family would have been my great uncle. My mothers' maiden name is Berridge, her father was Christian Gerard Timperly Berridge, he was the one of Canon Jesse Berridges' four sons. Christian Berridge, my grandfather was most interested in the Berridge family tree and had book now long out of print and which I believe my mother now has on the Berridge family. The Berridge family, from my mothers side is now quite small so I was interested to come across your website and the information contained there.

The Commonwealth War graves Commision website search engine will provide you with the full details of Lt. Jesse Dell Berridge. My particular interest in the Berridges is Capt Henry Berridge who is mentioned in your site. Capt Berridge commanded serval vessels in addition to "Walmer Castle" - Highflyer, Superb to mention two. The National Maritime Museum in London, has several original paintings which were given by my grand father and his elder brother Denys -the eldest of Canon Jesse Berridges sons. The NMC also has the journal of Capt Berridge wife made when she accompanied her husband on several voyages. Regards Martin Pitt bagwump(at)mozcom.com

    • Temperley descendants have found a branch of the Aspatria family (pre-1900's) that migrated to Scotland approx 1905 that you or your husband might be interested in. There are some existing Scottish civil registrations for individuals that are probably JST's sons or grandsons. I have cc'd Alec Temperley on this email as his branch of the Temperley's is well documented, and there is a pretty good indication that Joseph Swinburn Temperley (1838) was also descended from the same branch that originated in Hunstanworth co DUR (then Edmondbyers, then Aspatria CUL). There are several interesting aspects to the Aspatria branch - one of them being that a boy age 14 shows on one of the 1851 census in DUR - occupation coal miner - who appears to be the same Joseph Swinburn Temperley 1838. As you probably know, Joseph worked his way up to mining manager when in CUL. I'm a Temperley descendant, and my branch begins in the area around St. John Lee, Northumberland. I would be glad to pass this information along to other descendants - there are about 15 of us that correspond on a regular basis via email. Bill Thompson william.thompson1(at)att.net
