Family History
This branch of the Timperley family originates from what is now known as
the Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire area of England, formerly part of Cheshire and
Lancashire Counties and the "West Riding" of Yorkshire, respectively.
The Census of 1881 lists Alfred E. Timperley, age 34, and wife Alice, age
35, as living in Thornhill, Yorkshire. Alfred's occupation was recorded as Warehouseman
Woollen Yarn. His place of birth was recorded as Manchester, Lancashire, while his wife's
was recorded as Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Two children were listed, Charles A., age 5, born
in Carlinghow, Yorkshire and George F. N., age 2, born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. This
information is from G.S.U. film number 1342101, page 15, folio 103, piece 4568.
David Timperley of Stockport, Cheshire, has provided the following
information: The birth of Agnes Louisa Timperley was recorded in Bradford, Yorkshire
in 1884. Her marriage was also recorded there in 1908. Joseph Edwin Timperley's
marriage was recorded at Leeds, Yorkshire in 1908.
Joseph Edwin was a photographer and traveled the countryside of England
and Scotland, taking family portraits. He and his wife Jane Emma (Swallow) were in
Glasgow, Scotland when Joseph William Frank Timperley their
first child was born. Shortly thereafter, they immigrated to Providence, Rhode Island, USA
and bought a house at 20 Lincoln Avenue. In Providence they had three more children,
Emmelene, Josephine, and Alfred Edwin. Emmelene married Roland Koppelman and they adopted
a son Rick. Josephine married Arthur Mears and they had a daughter Patricia. Alfred served
in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war he apprenticed to the Brown & Sharpe
Company and later started his own manufacturing business. At age 48, he married Marilyn,
who already had two children by a previous marriage, David and Ellyn Maine. Alfred and
Marilyn had one child Mark Edwin. Mark graduated from the University of Rhode Island with
major and minor degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, respectively. He is
currently a Principal Software Engineer for Invensys Software Systems. He married
Katrina, his college sweetheart. Katrina is also a Mechanical Engineer, specializing in
Computational Fluid Dynamics. She has worked for Pratt & Witney and General Dynamics,
Electric Boat Division. She is currently a full time Mom. They live in Rhode Island, which
is on the north east coast of the United States (New England).

Churches
St PAUL
(Church of England), Brunswick Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire is within 1/4 mile
of 16 Rumford Street (as the crow flies). Brunswick St. and Rumford Street crossed each
other between Oxford Road and Upper Brook Street. I think that this church is what is
referred to above as "St Paul, New Cross", although there is another St Paul, at Olham Road, in
the township of New Cross, about 3 miles from Manchester.

St JAMES
(Church of England) George Street, Manchester, Lancashire. A St James appears on this map
of Manchester made in 1801. This church is very close to Chorlton St. where, a Joseph
Timperley was listed in the Commercial Directory for 1816-17.
St MARY(Church
of England) St Mary Street, Manchester, Lancashire. A St Mary's appears on this map
of Manchester made in 1801.
Current Research
- The Commercial Directory for 1816-17, which contains the Names, Trades, and Situations
of the Merchanges, Manufacturers, and Tradesmen (Manchester, 1816) list a Joseph
Timperley, Occupation: Miscellaneous, Address: 17 Chorlton St., Manchester
Research assistance in England, including procurement of birth and marriage
certificates, was purchased from Steve Jackson, LancsResearch http://www.sjnw23779.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/LancsResearch/
- In the 1851 directory there is a Joseph Timperley listed at 16 Bank Street, Red Bank as
a machine broker, which could be loosely interpreted as a type of agent. There is also a
Joseph Timperley listed at Flag Row, Newtown as a Marine Store Dealer.
- I have been checking the 1841 & 1851 Census in Manchester Library to try and locate
Joseph Bennett Mason, but have not found him yet. He is listed in the 1841 directory at 23
Rutland Street, but didn't prove to be at this address in the 1841 Census . I am
reasonably certain that it will be the same person because of the unusual second name and
the fact that his occupation is also listed as bookkeeper. I do have a further index to
check yet to try and locate him in the 1841 Census.
- I have also located a Joseph Timperley at 17 Craven Street, Hulme, Manchester listed as
a bookkeeper in the 1851 durectory, but yet again he didn't prove to be at this address in
the 1851 Census. The second name of 'Bennett' was not mentioned in this directory, but
there was only one bookkeeper.
