Family HistoryThis family has lived and worked mainly in Sheffield since the middle of the 18th century. The marriage registers of Sheffield parish church (Cathedral of Saint Peter) record that James Timperley married Elizabeth Tingle, both from that parish, on 13th June 1781. So far we have been unable to trace a record of his baptism. It seems likely that he was born in one of the villages in the Peak District and that his migration into the Sheffield area was along the trading routes between Lancashire and Cheshire, where the town called Timperley is situated. James was a cutler by trade. He had two sons John (born 1782) and James (born 1789), who married an Irish girl named Elizabeth. Most of their descendants worked as toolmakers in Sheffield, with the exception of Louis Timperley who emigrated to America in 1864. Walter Timperley (born 1848) founded his own tool-making company. The company was later run by one of his sons, Walter Alonzo Timperley (born 1873) and following that by one of the sons of the latter, Joseph Lewis Timperley (born 1907). The company won a medal for craftsmanship at the Victoria Exhibition in the late 19th century. The other son of Walter Alonzo Timperley, with the same name (born 1904), graduated in Medicine at Sheffield University, having won the Sir Arthur Hall medals for best student in both Medicine and Pathology. He practiced as a physician and made original contributions as an amateur archaeologist and ornithologist. His only son, Walter Richard Timperley (born 1936) also qualified in medicine, at Oxford University, and now practices as a pathologist with a special interest in diseases of the nervous system at the Central University Hospitals in Sheffield. He is ex-President of the Association of Clinical Pathologists (UK) and is currently Secretary-General of the World Association of Societies of Pathology. In 1961, Walter Richard Timperley married Rosalind, who was born in Manchester, England. They met in Yugoslavia in 1954, when both were still at school, each having gone independently on a trip organized by the Council for Education in World Citizenship. The trip was to help improve relationships between the East and West. It must have had quite an effect on them, since they have remained happily married ever since! Both of their daughters, Jane (born 1964) and Anne (born 1965) work in health care, Jane as an anaesthetist and Anne as a senior nurse. Additional information, including the early history of this family in Sheffield and Derbyshire, is available at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/t/i/m/Paul-Timperley/index.html Comments on ResearchWe have a problem with James Timperley who married Elizabeth Tingle. We have their marriage but cannot find the baptism of James which we assumed would be some time between 1750 and 1760. All the entries in Sheffield were searched but to no avail. James was a cutler so the apprenticeship records for cutlers were examined and three James were found, the likeliest being the son of William Timperley of Bradwell, Derbyshire. Unfortunately a search of the registers for this area still did not reveal a baptism for James. A search for his burial in Sheffield also proved fruitless. The trouble now is that to widen the search needs professional genealogists who can read the very old script used in the records and who know exactly where to look and this is expensive. I am currently researching my mother's family which is keeping me busy but will consider investing a bit more in the Timperley research later this year. I have a lot of data on Annie Rowson, my great grandmother, and her family if anyone is interested - she was married to Walter Timperley. If I can be of any furthert help please let me know.
