Lewis Templeton was born in Sheffield, England May 11, 1846 as Lewis Timperley. He was the son of James Timperley and Mary Anne Bacon. It is unclear just how the name became "Templeton" after he immigrated to America in 1864. Lewis (who was nick-named "Yorky") first lived in the east, possibly Pennsylvania, before moving to Southeast Kansas about 1878 or 1879. There he met a young widow, Marcia Elizabeth Robinson, who had a baby girl, Bertha. Lewis and Marica were married July 4, 1879 in Cherokee County, KS. Their first child, James Francis Robinson Templeton was born in Scammonville, KS November 11, 1879. Being a coal miner by trade, Lewis took his family to Krebs, Indian Territory about 1880 to seek work in the mines. They subsequently had six more children. He worked in mines as long as health and age permitted. He was always active in any movement that would better the conditions of the miners, and was well liked by everyone. He died May 16, 1926 and is buried in McAlester, OK.
