The following information was provided by Richard H. Timperley. Richard Timperley is the Author of Hero's Galore, an autobiography and family history.

Family Tree & History

A straight numbering system has been used with the addition of one extra asterisk for each subsequent generation from William Thomas Postles TIMPERLEY. Thus *2 represents the 2nd child of W.T.P. TIMPERLEY and **1 would be a grandchild of W.T.P. TIMPERLEY.

William Thomas Postles TIMPERLEY (c.1807-1888). He was baptised at St. James, Manchester on 29.7.1807, the son of John TIMPERLEY and Elizabeth. He died on 19.12.1888 at 4 Victoria Terrace, Herne Bay and was buried in Herne Cemetery, Kent. At the time of his marriage in 1832 he was shown as "Gentleman". When his first child was baptised his trade or profession is "Esquire". When he was living on the Isle of Man the baptismal entry for one of his children shows his profession as "H.P. [Half-Pay] Officer". In 1842, while still living on the Isle of Man he was appointed Curate at Ironbridge in Shropshire at £lOO per annun and was ordained by the Bishop of Hereford in 1843. For 4 years until 1850 W.T.P. TIHPERLEY was Chaplain to the British Ambassador at Berne, Switzerland. In March 1851 he arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia on the "Mary Ann" with his 2 sons. William Henry and Frank, and appears to have tried farming at Wanneroo for some time. He later returned to England, but he and his wife lived separately after that time and after her death in 1881 he remarried. In his Will he is shown to be "Clerk in Holy Orders", but he is not thought to have been a parish priest, but rather to have lived on the income from the Marriage Settlement. When he died in 1888 his personal estate was valued at £495, but the marriage settlement was worth £9,800 and that included £1,600 worth of property in Birmingham which was described as being in a dilapidated condition. Married (1) 29.9.1832 at Manchester Cathedral to Elizabeth Bradney EVANS. She was born c.1806 at Birmingham, Warwickshire (1881 Census) and died on 27.6.1881 at the home of her daughter at Highbury, London. She was buried in Highgate Cemetery. Her address at the time of her marriage was given as Kenilworth, Warwick shire. Nothing is known of her early life but some family members have a photograph of a portrait of her painted when she was a girl. This is said to have been painted by her uncle, Richard EVANS (1784-1871) and hung in the Royal Acadamy (possibly in 1819). The original is in the possession of Mrs. Phyllis BERRIDGE of Surrey, England. Phyllis BERRIDGE is the widow of Harold BERRIDGE, a grandson of Elizabeth Bradney TIMPERLEY (nee EVANS). According to Mrs. BERRIDGE, Elizabeth was a god daughter of Sir Robert Peel (1783-1850) and he was very good to her. When William Thomas Postles TIMPERLEY and the two older sons left England for Western Australia, Elizabeth stayed behind with the two remaining younger children, Oughton and Maud, then aged about 9 and 5 years old. In the 1881 Census Elizabeth is shown to be living with her daughter Maud and son-in-law Capt. Henry BERRIDGE and she said she had "income from houses". William Thomas Postles TIMPERLEY married (2) in 1882 Alice and there is no knowledge of any children of this second marriage.

*1. William Henry TIMPERLEY (1833-1909). He was born on 22.5.1833 and was baptised at Solihull, Shropshire, and died on 11.8.1909 at South Perth, Western Australia. He was buried in Karrakatta Cemetery. He is said to have been educated at Shrewsbury School and when his father became British Chaplain at Berne, Switzerland, he enrolled in the philosophical faculty of the Berner Hochschule in 1850 ( Aust. Dict. of Biography Vol.6). In November, 1850 he sailed with his father and brother, Frank, in the "Mary Ann" for Fremantle, Western Australia. They reached their destination in March, 1851. William Henry TIHPERLEY remained in Western Australia when his father and brother left. On 19.1.1856 he joined the W.A. Police Force. By 1857 he was stationed in Bunbury and as Sergeant seems to have been the senior officer for the Wellington district. It was here that he met his future wife, Rebecca PROPERJOHH. W.H. TIMPERLEY served in various country areas of W.A. as well as some time in Perth. He resigned from the Police Force on 1.8.1885 to take up the appointment of Superintendent of Rottnest Island, having been a Police Inspector since 1.1.1871. While he was Superintendent of Rottnest Island he was encouraged by Lady Broome, wife of the Governor and herself a former journalist, to write down some of the tales he was fond of recounting. He wrote two books for boys, the first "Harry Treverton--his Tramps and Troubles" published about 1888 and "Bush Luck" published in 1892 in London by the Religious Tract Society. During his time on Rottnest Island he took about 9 months leave and went to England apparently in connection with the division of the property left to the family when his father died. In Hay, 1889 he sailed from Albany W.A. and when in England stayed in London with his sister, Maud and brother-in-law, Henry BERRIDGE. His brother, Frank TIMPERLEY, also visited London from Mauritius, but the youngest brother, Oughton didn't join them. He seems to have been living in Sydney, N.S.W. It was 15th February, 1890 before W.H. TIHPERLEY left England again to return to Western Australia. On 29.9.1890 the family left Rottnest Island to live once more in Bunbury as he had received the appointment of Resident Magistrate there. At the end of 1904 he retired from office and sold his Bunbury home to the State Government and moved to live in Onslow Street, South Perth. The following year he was appointed a Companion of the Imperial Service Order for a long and honorable civil service career. W.H. TIMPERLEY seems to have been a competent fiddler and flautist and seemed to enjoy singing and amateur acting. He seems to have taken an active part in the social life of the townships where he was stationed and was interested in the Church, Mechanics Institute and Masonic Lodge. Mt.Timperley, named by Surveyor H.F. Johnston in 1883; Timperley Range named by John Forrest and Lake Timperley on Rottnest Island are all named after W.H. TIMPERLEY according to advice from the Nomenclature Advisory Committee and probably Timperley Road in Bunbury is also. Married 2.11.1858 at Bunbury, Western Australia to Rebecca PROPERJOHN (1842-1910). She was born in Bunbury, Western Australia on 23.2.1842, the daughter of Charles PROPERJOHN and his 2nd wife Elizabeth (daughter of John STENNETT [or SLENNETT]). Charles PROPERJOHN, described as butcher, painter and glazier, had arrived at Port Leschenault on 18.3.1841 per barque "Parkfield" with his wife, son Charles (by a previous marriage) and small daughter Hannah. Rebecca was baptised by the Rev. Wollaston at the first church service that he held in Bunbury. She died at South Perth. Western Australia on 22.2.1910 and was burried at Karrakatta Cemetery.

The above list of descendants is not complete but contains the names of all those known at this time. Possibly William Thomas Postles TIMPERLEY's brothers James Postles TIMPERLEY and John Postles TIMPERLEY had children but when William Henry TIMPERLEY was in England in 1889 he made no mention in his diary of any relatives other than the BERRIDGES. William Henry TIMPERLEY's brother Frank was married but it is not known whether he had any family. His second brother Oughton had a son Frank Hodgson TIMPERLEY who married in 1893 but nothing further is known of him. Although William Henry TIMPERLEY has left quite a number of descendants most do not bear the name of TIMPERLEY and the name is still uncommon in Australia.

These notes record some of what is known about William Thomas Postles TIMPERLEY (1807-1888) and his wife Elizabeth Bradney (nee EVANS) (1806-1881), their possible forbears and the names of some of their descendants in Western Australia and elsewhere.

Information has been obtained from the following:

  1. International Genealogical Index (referred to as IGI). This is compiled by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from parish registers in the British Isles and other countries.
  2. Microfilms of some parish registers. Note: Manchester Cathedral was originally the parish church of St. Mary, St. Denys and St. George. It became a cathedral in 1847. St. James, Manchester was built in the 1780s and was a chapelry in the parish of Manchester St. Philip’s, Birmingham was built as a parish church in the early 1700s and became a cathedral about 1900.
  3. English Census records.
  4. Battey Library of Western Australia.
  5. Wollaston’s Albany Journal - 1848-1856.
  6. Diaries of William Henry TIMPERLEY (1833-1909).
  7. Recollections of Mrs. P. E. BERRIDGE of Sutton, Surrey, England
  8. Present day descendants in Australia - Connie ALDERSON, Richard TIMPERLEY, Arthur COLLETT, Joan HOGAN, Gwenda BOLT and Douglas and Joan TIMPERLEY.

The name TIMPERLEY appears to have originated in Cheshire, but we have not so far been able to trace our family further back than the 1780s in Manchester, Lancashire. No doubt a professional searcher would be able to find out more than we have been able to from this distance.

The following parish register entries have been found in the IGI.

St. Philip’s, Birmingham Mary WHITE baptized 1782 dau. of Samuel WHITE and Elizabeth

It is only suggested that the above parish register entries are connected with one another, but nothing more likely has been found on the IGI.

Baptisms at St. James, Manchester
of children of John TIMPERLEY and Elizabeth.

John TIMPERLEY and his wife, Elizabeth had 11 children baptized at St. James, Manchester. All of the sons had the name "Postles" included in their names, so it seems reasonable to assume that they were the children of John TIMPERLEY and Elizabeth POSTLES who were married at Manchester Cathedral (the main parish church) in 1789.
