CHAPTER I: THE TIMPERLEYS AND THE HOUSE OF NORFOLK Libraries with Item: "Timperley of Hintlesham a study of a Suffolk family", Ryan, (London 1931)"
Origin of the Timperley Family The following information is from this book which itself is attributed to "Visitation of Cheshire", 1581 (College of Arms), p. 161. Sir John Timperley,
lord of Timperley and of
Barfoot and Longendale in
com. Cestr. (circa 1270).

| (additional children?)
Sir William Timperley,
knight, son and heire.
|
|
Johane, daughter and heire,
married to Sir Hammond
Massy, knight.
The "Visitation of Cheshire", 1581 also list another son of Sir John Timperley, as John Timperley, but unfortunately assigns his death to the year 1400, which, assuming his father lived in 1270, is highly unlikely. Therefore, whether there was a cadet branch of the family of Sir John Timperley is still open to speculation. The Timperleys of HintleshamThe Massey / Timperley connectionThe following "coat of arms" for Sir Hamond Massy (below), comes from Folio 28, Addendum to "Glover's Visitation of Cheshire", 1581. Note that the Timperley coat of arms (Gules, a lion rampant ermines) is impaled on the Massy coat of arms (Quarterly argent and gules, a bend azure) as was customary when two families were joined by marriage. It is possible that some families having the Timperley name are descended from the family of Massey (Massy, Massie) of Cheshire. The book entitled "Timperley of Hintlesham a study of a Suffolk family", Ryan, London 1931, suggests that some descendants of the Massey family, who acquired the manor of Timperley in Cheshire by marriage to a Johane Timperley (daughter and heir to the manor of Timperley), may have used the Timperley name in place of their own surname. The author sites a deed from Cheshire, 1363 signed "Thomas de Massi of Timperley" and also notes the similarity of the Massey and Timperley coat of arms. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
