Simonburn

Film FHL 1068697

Simonburn was apparently a very Presbyterian parish.  Also, four chapelries evolved from Simonburn including Falstone.  Greystead (1811) Falstone (1811)

Newbrough film

Indexes contained on film H1.

FHL Film 1068697 Whitfield Parish includes Newburough, Warden et al.  It is actually a miscellaneous film, and contains more indexes than records, but partial transcriptions were added.  In fact John Temperley only shows as indexed, see Researched Records for John.

Newbrough Records

Newbrough, like Hemshaugh, is not on the IGI or Boyds marriage index.  Since the FHL film had more indexs than records, it would appear the bulk of the records would be at the usual places, Morpeth, Durham U., and services and libraries.  Apparently, burials are available in book form at the Newcastle library.

Warden

Warden may be the trickiest of parishes around the area in terms of what and where records are available.  This from Genuki.com:

Warden, St Michael and All Angels: Records of baptisms and marriages 1695-1979 and burials 1695-1812 are available at Morpeth Records Centre. Bishops' Transcripts for the period 1769-1878 are deposited at Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections, 5 The College, Durham City. The International Genealogical Index (I.G.I.) includes baptisms 1695-1724 for this parish, and Boyd's Marriage Index includes marriages 1695-1723. Transcripts of baptisms 1695-1979, marriages 1695-1943 and burials 1695-1978 for Warden are available at Newcastle Central Library, Local Studies Dept. A transcript of monumental inscriptions at Warden (microfiche TN75) is published by Northumberland and Durham Family History Society and these records are also available in book form at Newcastle Central Library, Local Studies Department.

Some Warden – Newbrough marriages from Bell Genuki also referenced on lists herein. (IGI and Boyds also)

There were Temperleys listed both on the Alston registers and Arthuret in Cumberland.  This microfilm looked particularly appealing because it was bishop's transcripts.

"Hexamshire" Northumberland

This is a paragraph from North Fiche - that may explain why Temperley wills and documents may be at York rather than Durham - [browsed online July 2002] http://www.jwillans.freeserve.co.uk/wills.html.  The value of Wills and other Probate documents to genealogical searchers is well known, but they are not always easily accessible. Northfiche now has some "Will material" available for the first time.

Most Durham and Northumberland wills prior to 1858 were proved at the Consistory Court in Durham but a sizeable minority were proved at York. This is because the south west Northumberland area known as "Hexhamshire" – the parishes of Allendale, Allenheads or Allendale St Peter, Bingfield St Mary, Carrshields or High West Allen, Hexham, Ninebanks or Low West Allen, St John Lee, St Oswald in Lee, and Whitley Chapel –were in the Diocese of York rather than in the Diocese of Durham. Moreover, if a testator held assets in the Diocese of York as well as in Durham Diocese, his will had to be proved in York.
