Topical: Apprenticeships |
|
Finding Apprentices: Apprentices were often young men and boys bound by an indenture (agreement or contract) to serve a master of a ship for a particular period of time (usually between 7 to 9 years). From 1704 until about 1804, there was a tax on apprenticeship indentures. This tax is actually good news for modern researchers as it usually means that a record of some kind was required to be kept to properly record the collection of the tax. The majority of records related to the apprenticeship tax are held by the PRO in IR 1 (an index to the records is found in IR 17). The apprenticeship books usually list the name, address and trace of the master, the name of the apprentice and the date of their indenture. Between 1704 and the early 1750s, the names of an apprentice's parent are often listed. Unfortunately, parents names are not usually listed after this time. |
