Descendants of Guliliemus WILLIAM /TEMPERLEY-1

Notes

23. Thomas TEMPERLEY-1343

Known problems with ancestral file for family of Thomas Temperley whomarried Mary Askew. Ancestral file has the family listed in thedescendancy for Fallowfield, and it appears this may incorrect. Thefamily should be placed on the Hunstanworth tree.

Unless anyone has any objections, I'd like to write a letter to thesubmitter, and ask her if she would like to share research notes.

I noticed that the researcher's descendancy ran through this family,however I'm fairly sure that the intent of her file (She lives in Utah)was to foster research and that the researcher probably would be amenableto sharing notes in order to prevent brickwalls.

Also, Alec. has a pretty solid ascent to the Readshaw-Temperley unioncirca 1750, and that's pretty good too! The Hunstanworth line is turningout to be a real source of lines emmigrating to the U.S., so there is alot of company in the states.

I'm sure you'll all agree that the file has been a catalyst for peopleresearching the Temperley surname, and has brought some people together.It appears to be the only file on LDS Ancestral that has the St. John Leeindividuals. I have a hunch that the researcher would probably be gladto see the changes and new information that people have gathered.

27. William TEMPORAL-1.3.5.2.

* * * * * *
William's name is spelled Temporal here because that is the way itappeared on IGI extractions of the record. There doesn't seem to be anyexplanation as to why his record and the marriage of his father wasspelled that way. Although it is not certain, since the record was theonly last name Temperoral in the entire NorthEast of England, and theparents names fit, it seems a reasonable conclusion that this record issurname Temperley. There were varying degrees of literacy at this time.Some members of the family on other branches were leaving 'x' as theirmark, circa 1750.

There is no marriage extent for William Temperley and Isabell ?. At timeof writing, a string of unlinked records was added to the descendancy forthis individual. For purely research reasons, threads are filereferenced and numbered from the letter "T" an arbitrary 'Thread' number#T-9 was assigned as a file reference to the thread of William Temperlee,and descendants as an example. It can be assumed that unlinked recordsare not verified, and that threads are secondary sources of information.

The person who is unlinked is assigned a number that represents the orderand number of family just like the other individuals, for viewing on thedescendancy chart, but their number starts with 'XX'. As an example, thefirst child of an unlinked individual numbered XX1 would be assigned thenumber XX11, the second child XX12, etc. That way there is no confusingthe unlinked records from the ones that are actually genealogicallylinked and proofed. Since there could be a string of unlinkedindividuals, the thread number represents the start of the lineage.

Thread #T-9, Individual numbered 1.3.5.2., wife numbered x.3.5.2.

This creates a suggested link for the wife of William Temperlee, whosefirst name was Isabell, as per Falstone parish records as pertaining tothe christening of child Elizabeth. and who may have had the childrenlisted thus far in the thread as Nicholas, Elizabeth, and Ann.

Thread #T-9, Individual numbered X.X.5.2.1. - Nicholas

Nicholas Temperley, whose baptism on Hexham prs, was noted as being theson of 'William Temperley, smith'. Note the additional X, as this recordis attached to an unlinked record.

Thread #T-9, Individual numbered X.3.5.2.2. - Elizabeth

This creates a suggested link for Elizabeth Temperlee c. 20 Jan 1775Falstone Parish being linked to William Temperlee and Isabell ? whoresided at Smalesmouth at the time of her christening. Elizabeth isAssigned the number X.3.5.2.2. and is linked to the record of Isabel ?but is not proven as linked to this particular William.

Thread #T-9, Individual numbered X.X.5.2.3. and X.X.4.9.1. - Ann c1777

This creates a suggested link for Ann Temperley b. 1777 FalstonePresbyterian. Her christening record indicated 'Father, WilliamTemperley, blacksmith of Haydon Bridge.' This being linked to WilliamTemperlee 1.3.5.2. and Isabell ? Ann is Assigned the number X.X.4.9.1 ifWilliam 1349 turns out to be the blacksmith from Haydon Bridge.X.X.5.2.3. for possible placement if William turns out to be theblacksmith from Haydon Bridge. She is on the chart twice, both unlinkedrecords.

Thread #T-9, Individual numbered X.X.5.2.4. - Ann c1773

This creates a suggested link for Ann Temperley b. 24 Oct 1773, andbecause the unlinked record X.X.5.2.3. for Ann Temperley who married JohnThompson did not die young, this record is conditional upon thecircumstances that Ann numbered X.X.5.2.3. may be related. What may beparticularly relevant in this case is the Ann Temperley that was witnessto the marriage of Nicholas X.3.4.3.2. and who married Edward MABBUTT whowas a Baptist minister, 13 Jun 1811 at Hexham prs.

The father William, if he was the blacksmith from Haydon Bridge, is atthis time the putative father of Ann Temperley who married John Thompson1800 in Newcastle. The John Temperley m. Mary Oxley line is a fairlyrecent discovery by rsr EW. William 1349 is the other William.

Thread #T-9; Summary

Baptisms in Simonburn in the early 1800's to an Edward & Jane (Edwardalso had an illegitimate son); Matthew & Catherine and an Isabella had adaughter, Ann (no father mentioned).

There were also marriages, Elizabeth to a William Robson in 1772 (WitnessWilliam Temperley) and John Temperley to an Anne Charlton (Witnesses:George and Edward Temperley).

This thread is not specific to any one individual but is specific toapprenticeships, and the indentures and contracts signed. There is adocument extent, the indenture of Matthew Temperley, whose father MatthewTemperley was listed residing in Mount Farm, Simonburn parish. A JohnTemperley also signed this indenture, along with Ralph Reed who was themaster Joiner. John Thompson, the husband of Ann Temperley X.X.5.2.3.was a cordwainer. RSR-1 has requested several microfilms from Newcastle,NBL, as well as Darlington, DUR for apprenticeship indexes.

58. Ann TEMPERLEY-XX524

Thread #T-9, Individual numbered X.X.5.2.4. - Ann c1773 - thread presumesthat she died young.

Being that there are two Ann's in this thread, it is a possibility thatthis unlinked record is assigned an incorrect place on the tree, howeverthe thread presumes that there is also the possibility that the childdied young.

Mary SHIPLEY HEIGHT

* * *

Mary Shipley apparently first married Mr. Height, as the marriage on theIGI is Henry Temperley m. Mary Height m. 2 Aug 1785 p. Chollerton, NBL,Eng

The Bishop Transcripts for Warden Parish, as it relates to the Birth ofHenry and Mary's daughter Ann:

Ann Temperley born 6th May 1798 baptised 27 th October 1798 Sixthdaughter of Henry Temperley native of Bywell St Peter by his wife MaryShipley daughter of Robert Shipley Farmer native of Barrisford in theParish of Chollerton.

While there is no christening on an original source showing on the IGI,there were several patron sheets submitted for a Mary Shipley christened9 Jul 1758 Chollerton, Northumberland, England. The mother's nameappeared on one of the sheets as Margaret KERKIP.

There did not appear to be a marriage record on the IGI for a MaryShipley marriage to a Mr. Height.

Reading the will of Mary Shipley-Height's mother, there appears to be aslight implication that Edward is not Mary's eldest child. The baptismdates seem to indicate that Edward would be the eldest. The will beingproved in 1801 indicates that Jane may have passed away. Residences ofEdward and Margaret Elizabeth are noted. It would appear that the 8thchild, a twin of the 7th child Frances, died young since he is notmentioned.

This is the will of Mary Shipley-Height's mother:

Jane SHIPLEY, widow, Fourstones, parish of Warden, 18 June 1798
Mr.Ralph Smith, Northumberland, gentleman and Robert Dickinson, Hexham,bookseller, executors; James Allgood esquire; William Hepple;grand-daughter Jane Temperley, eldest child of daughter Mary Temperley;six younger children of said daughter Mary Temperley, "that is to say"Edward Temperley, Margaret Elizabeth Temperley, Mary Temperley, IsabellaTemperley, Robert Elliott Temperley and Frances Temperley.
Witnesses: Edward Pruddah; Thomas Usher jnr.
Proved 27 Oct.1801 by Robert Dickinson; under Đ1,000.
4 July 1812 by letters of administration with will annexed granted toEdward Temperley, Longridge, Northumberland, husbandman and MargaretTemperley "of the same place", spinster; under Đ1,000.

30. John TEMPERLEY #A-1355

* * *
John and Ann Elliot Temperley's children baptised at Ebenezer IndependentChurch Hexham. This was at a time when non-conformity was spreadingthroughout Northern England. John obviously did not continue as ChurchWarden at Warden church that is why only Henry his brother appears tohave followed in his father's footsteps.

The above information also ties in with record extent of the Certificateof a Protestant meetinghouse at Allerwash 11th April 1815 (NorthumberlandRecord Office). Resident John Temperley. This is a document registeredin Quarter Sessions by John Scott, dissenting minister. John Scott alsosigned as Deacon of Ebenezer Independant Chapel, and signed many baptismsat that church.

Later, Elizabeth Jane Temperley would marry John Gray, who was apparentlythe attending minister at Ebenezer Independant also.

To confirm the link, the will of Edward Temperley who died in 1809 (andis brother of John) states that he leaves his share of the farm atAllerwash to his brother John Temperley who he also appoints as a Trusteefor his wife and children.

Report of a visitation in 1805 of the Greenwich Hospital Commissioners:Barony of Langley estates belong to the hospital-Allerwash Middle Farm.21 year lease to John Temperley at Đ168 until 1812. Good farm with twostables a kennel with granary. Two barns. Threshing machines with? overhorse track. Three byres, swine, henhouse all in good order.

Notes by Researcher EW

Oct .30 1799 Margaret Vaux of Bishopwearmouth to Edward Temperley Farmerof Fourstones Fell Warden. Bondsman Thomas Robinson of Sunderland Flaxdresser.

23 June 1800 Edward Temperley Coal fitter of Bishopwearmouth Bondsman toCuthbert Vaux and Elizabeth Wilson.

N.B.Did Mary and Thomas move to Sunderland to be followed by brotherEdward?
Edward changed from farmer to coal fitter when he moved .As the youngestson he would have a minor role to play in the farm. He did keep aninterest in it, however, as his will dated 1809 gives this interest tobrother John Temperley a farmer of Allerwash in the County ofNorthumberland. Other holdings were put in Trust for the use of his wifeand children.

34. George TEMPERLEY-X.4.2.1.

[circa 1725]
* * *

The progenitor of the Hunstanworth lineage.

It is not known how or if for certain that George is linked to theFallowfield ancestral tree shown.

The lineages numbered with an 'x' represent the original unlinkedlineage, that of George, and are numbered to place on the chronology.The records that follow George ARE linked to George; the problem is theparentage for George is not yet extent, nor a birth record.

There are new records being discovered, and the rate of discovery isconsistent. As this file was opened in order to foster research, thesenotes are placed here to help narrow the search pattern, and assist inordering microfilm or other original sources.

The chronology is attached to the ancestral tree as a best estimate, andthe numbers represent a speculation of where George would fit if hisrecord were proved.

* * *
Hunstanworth is at the top of a hill. At the bottom on one side theyhave mined lead or Flourspar for hundreds of years, right up until moderntimes. On the other side they mined outcropping coal for much the sameperiod. It was very much the same at Fallowfield.

77. Jane TEMPERLEY-X.4.2.1.2.

There is a marriage between a Peter Bell and Jane Temperley 12 Nov 1774Stanhope, Durham, England that is possibly the marriage of this Jane.
