Matthew Temperly and Rachel McClure

· Rachel McClure was born near Carlisle, Lancaster County PA in 1808 anddied 8/15/1877. She was the 2nd daughter of Jonathan McClure (II).Married Matthew Temperly in Chambersburg PA in 1827. They relocated toBaltimore MD and then to Indianapolis IN in 1832 and came to Madison INin 1833.

· Matthew Temperly was born 1802 in England and died in 1858in MadisonIndiana. Matthew lived in the Mount Farm [wnt inserts probably townshipwithin Simonburn] Parish of Northumberland, England and apprenticed as acabinetmaker prior to coming to America. He was a Carpenter in Madisonand apprenticed several young men in the trade of carpentry according tocounty records. The attached 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census shows thefollowing children: John, Catharine, Elisabeth, William, Richard, andJoseph.

· Matthew Temperly born 1833 died 1848 buried Springdale Cem., Madison

· John Temperly married Mary (?) Both were born about 1830. John was acarpenter. According to a Newspaper report in 1859 John Temperly was incharge of replacing the cupola of the Madison Courthouse destroyed byfire in 1858. In the 1859-1860 Madison Directory, John was living at thesame address as his Uncle Jonathan McClure (My Great Great Grandfather).
· Their children were Matthew, William, Laura, J. Lincoln, Charles, andGeorge.

· Catharine Jane (Kate) Temperly born in Madison in 1837 married RufusHinds 12/4/1855. Rufus owned and operated a freight line between SouthBend, IN and CA. He died in 1868 in Tucson AZ while getting on his horsehis rife discharged and he was killed. He was 35 years old.
· Their children were "Bessie" and Hugh Matthew Hinds born Madison in1858 and died 1933 in Vandalia MI, he married Anna Belle Rockwellpossibly in California.

· William Temperly born 1843 d. 1917 married Fanny (?). William was acarpenter. Buried Springdale Cem., Madison IN

· Richard Temperly b. 1844 d. 1909 married Maggie (Margaret b. 1844 d.1922 buried Springdale Cem., Madison IN) Summers 10/10/1863.

· They had No children by the 1880 Census.

"To complete his training as a cabinetmaker Matthew built a miniaturesecretary 9" high x 4" deep, it has 3 drawers and a fold down writingsurface and has inlay work. Uncle Charles has this piece, a bible andthe original indenture papers copied below."

THIS INDENTURE withnesseth that Matthew Temperly son of Matthew Temperlyof the Mount Farm, Parish of Simonburn and County of Northcumberland dothput himself Apprentice to Ralph Reed of Haydon Bridge County ofNorthumberland to learn his art, and with him after the Manner of anApprentice, to serve from the day of the date hereof for and during andunto the full End of Term of Seven years, from thence next ensuing, andfully to be completed and ended, during which Term the Apprentice hissaid Master shall and will serve, his Secrets kept, lawful Commandmentsevery where gladly do; he shall do no Damage to his said Master nor seeto be done of others, but to his Power shall let, or forthwith givenotice to his said master of the same, the Goods of his said Master heshall not waste, nor lend them unlawfully to any hurt to his said masterhe shall not do, cause or procure to be done; he shall neither buy orsell without his said Masters leave. Longridge is a tiny village showing on an 1861 Surveyor map East ofSimonburn town, East of the Cowden Plantation, East North East of theFairshaw Farm area of Simonburn, West of Barrasford. It doesn't appearto be on a modern day map, but is West of the elbow of the river fromwhere it turns on a North South heading to a West East heading. This isapproximately two miles East of Simonburn town.
